Drama

The primary aim of secondary school drama teaching may be summed up in a single overall objective :

    The Drama program should enable the pupil to use dramatic language as a means to express, communicate, and create, individually or in a group.

To achieve this objective, the teaching of drama should :

  • refine the pupil’s perception of himself and of his environment;
  • encourage personal expression through real and imaginary experiences;
  • give the pupil opportunities to become more proficient as a sender and receiver of verbal and non-verbal communications;
  • develop the pupil’s awareness of the personal and social dimensions of drama as a means of increasing his understanding of himself and of his culture.

In pursuing these objectives, it would be inappropriate to give priority to technical performance or the learning of a system that is alien to the pupil. The purpose of this program is not to give pupils a prescribed knowledge of drama, but rather, to give them opportunities to get in touch with their inner images and to develop their inventive capacities and critical spirit through conscious use of dramatic language.

A comprehensive approach to drama is recommended, in which the basics are covered in a learning process which encourages pupils to explore, to learn about, and to put into practice the different elements of drama.

The program seeks to transcend trends, styles, and fixed methods, in order to focus on the basic elements of drama and thus achieve the overall objective.
