For the optional geography program to meet the needs of the educational milieu and respect the aims and values of formal schooling, it must be committed to the following underlying principles :
- it is essential for all members of society to possess a knowledge of geography so that they are able to understand the information to which they are exposed;
- understanding the world requires a knowledge of geography;
- studying specific cases results in a better understanding of the organization of the world;
- countries are interdependent;
- several changes which are indicative of the future are already occurring;
- understanding the modern world means understanding humanity and sharing values;
- geography makes it possible for students to develop the ability to synthesize information.
The purpose of the optional geography program is to help students understand the geographic organization of their world. The expression "geographic organization" is used to describe the way in which human beings have organized or settled space on earth. Hence the program focuses on the study of human geography with some forays into the area of physical geography to ensure overall comprehension.
