MINISTERIAL EXAMINATION OF COLLEGE ENGLISH
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION AND LITERATURE

WRITING GUIDELINES

13 August 1997

Your task is to write an essay in which you develop your understanding of the reading you have chosen.

Before you start writing, read the Instructions in Booklet 1 carefully.

READING 1

If you have chosen to respond to Knowles' essay, indicate what you think his main point is, develop your thesis statement, and demonstrate your understanding of his argument. You can agree or disagree with him; you can evaluate the significance of his argument with regard to your own education and expectations; or you can analyse and respond to how he has made his argument. Do not simply summarize his essay.

READING 2

If you have chosen to respond to the short story, indicate what you think is Nowlan's point. By referring directly to the story, indicate how you have interpreted what Nowlan is saying, or indicate what you think is the significance of his story. You might wish to comment on how Nowlan's use of character, plot, and setting help bring out his main ideas or themes. Do not simply summarize the story.

READING 3

If you choose the essay "Living in Two Worlds" to respond to, prepare a thesis statement which allows you to explore one of Mabry's central ideas. Comment on what you consider to be the significance of what Mabry has to say. Does your own experience or observation parallel Mabry's? Do not simply summarize the essay.

Examiners will grade your work assuming it is your very best effort.
