Studying in Québec
Admission Process
1. Prerequisites
Before filing an application for admission, you should read about the Québec school system in order to determine the level of education for which you should apply.
Public schools at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as the public vocational training centres, are administered by the school boards. Prior to admitting you to a general or vocational program of study, the school board may request a Comparative Evaluation of Studies Done Outside Québec.
Please note that only institutes of higher learning in Québec may determine for themselves the equivalences they will recognize when admitting a candidate. An assessment of equivalent studies is carried out by an institution only when the application for admission is made according to established procedures.
If you do not know at which level you should apply because of the distinctive structure of Québec’s higher education system, you may request a Comparative Evaluation of Studies Done Outside Québec from the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC). You may then submit this document to the educational institution of your choice.
2. Choosing a School and a Program of Study
Once you have determined your level of education, you must choose a school and a program of study.
To this end, consult the list of different categories of educational institutions.

Vocational Training at the Secondary Level
Various vocational training programs (leading to a specialized trade or occupation) are offered throughout the year across the province of Québec. The start date, the length of program and admission process vary from one institution to another. Once you have selected a vocational training program, contact the institution where the program is being offered for information on admission procedures.
The Inforoute Vocational and Technical Training in Québec can help you find a vocational training program in Québec.
During the application process, the concerned educational institution or school board may request a Comparative Evaluation of Studies Done Outside Québec.
| Students can apply for admission even if they have not yet completed the school year in their country of origin. |
College or University
All students seeking admission to a college- or university-level institution must file an application. As the deadline for these applications varies from one institution to another, students should contact the institution of their choice to find out the deadline that applies to them.
For an overview of admission procedures for colleges and universities, consult the Web page Application for admission to colleges and universities.
Students should follow the instructions for international students which may differ from the instructions for Québec students. Students should also find out whether the program they would like to register for is open to international students.
It is also important to take the necessary steps to obtain authorizations to study in Québec.
