2006-2007 Recognition Awards
The objective of this activity, which is part of the Action Plan on Reading in School, is to recognize action taken in schools to promote books and reading among young people. More specifically, this activity is associated with the "Commitment" component of the action plan, and addresses school staff and students alike. It is aimed essentially at instilling a love of reading in young people so that they read more and make reading part of their everyday activities.
To get ideas for possible projects, see the anthology of the best projects submitted in 2005-2006 under the 2005-2006 Recognition Awards tab.
For schools: Recognition awards for encouraging boys to read
I am a member of the school staff and I want my school to get involved!
Are you a school staff member and who is committed to encouraging boys to read and to succeed? Would you like to inspire them to create projects that encourage them to read and to develop a habit of reading for pleasure? Do you want to extend your project's success and share it with others? All you have to do is get your school involved in the Recognition awards for encouraging boys to read.
Eligibility
All elementary or secondary public schools are eligible, as well as any vocational training or adult education centre in which students between the ages of 16 and 18 are enrolled.
Selection criteria
To determine the winners, the jury will take into account the originality of the projects and how effectively they promote an appreciation of reading among boys. It will also assess the positive influence that the projects may have on the development of new reading habits. This year, the members of the jury will be looking for projects involving families and the community that draw on a variety of subject areas and that use the school library for educational purposes.
Prizes
A first prize of $5000, a second prize of $3000 and a third prize of $2000 will be awarded to enable school teams to undertake motivating and stimulating literary and cultural projects. Several other participation prizes will be awarded.
How to participate
Send the following documents, in the same envelope, to your MELS regional office before February 16, 2007:
- The duly completed project submission form (Project Submission Form – Schools).
- A project proposal outlining your objectives, procedure, results (if applicable), etc. Any other document that will enable the jury to properly evaluate the project may also be included.
You may submit projects that were already set up last year in schools and are still ongoing in 2006-2007, or you may present new ones that were started this year and that the school intends to continue.
A regional jury will evaluate each project. Those that are selected will be submitted to the provincial jury.
The official award ceremony will take place on April 12, 2007, during the Salon international du livre de Québec.
