Message from the Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports

Dear Parents,

In the next few days, your child will set out on the road to school. As the Minister of Education, and especially as a parent, I know how demanding the back-to-school period can be for families. The beginning of the school year gives rise to big expectations, since we are all concerned about our children’s well-being and success.

Our government understands that you need quality time and services. That is why we have made a commitment to continually adapt our ways of doing things to help you in your daily endeavours. From now on, you can follow your children’s academic progress by consulting the new simplified uniform report card with number grades, which will be used in all Québec schools. We are also setting up numerous programs suited to your children’s areas of interest, particularly with respect to English language learning.

We all want our children to have the support of qualified professionals, so that they can develop their full potential. To better help those experiencing problems, and to enable those who find learning easier to make even more progress, we are making substantial investments for the purpose of hiring new specialists, including speech therapists and resource teachers. When we help young people who are experiencing problems, we help all the students in their class.

The school teams play a key role in our children’s education. In each school, teachers guide students on a daily basis in projects that foster their academic success. This team’s efforts would remain incomplete without your participation as parents devoted to the development of your child’s full potential.

We are well aware that the start of the school year involves certain expenses that many families may find burdensome. Our government therefore provides you with various forms of financial assistance, such as the Child Assistance measure. You can obtain more information on the various government programs by contacting Services Québec.

I hope that the school year lives up to your expectations. Let me conclude by repeating that our government remains attentive to your desires, in order to ensure that your child succeeds in school and that family life is indeed all that it can be.
