The theme and the activities planned for Teacher Appreciation Week will be announced shortly.
Below are suggestions for activities that you may find useful for Teacher Appreciation Week:
- At the preschool and elementary levels
- At the secondary level, in the youth and adult sectors
- In vocational training
At the preschool and elementary levels
The children, with the help of the school principal and parents, can:
- decorate the school with balloons, messages and a banner to highlight Teacher Appreciation Week
- decorate the teachers’ room
- make a big thank-you card signed by the students and put it on the classroom door or in the teachers’ room
- make an apple tree bearing the name of each teacher, along with a short message for them
- put a fruit basket or flowers in the teachers’ room with a thank-you letter
- offer the teachers a gift (a plant, a box of herbal teas, a framed picture, etc.) for their lunch room
- have the class compose a poem for the teachers
- write a message telling the teachers how much they appreciate them
- prominently display the posters distributed by the Ministère and those made by the students
- make a newspaper with children’s messages to the teachers
- write words of appreciation on the school’s windows
- hang a surprise bag containing messages from students on the classroom door
- give each student a paper apple on which to write words of appreciation for the teacher
- place a bunch of balloons on the classroom door.
School principals can:
- visit every classroom to underline their appreciation for teachers’ work
- organize a meeting with the schools partners after class to mark the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week
- recruit volunteers to take over teachers’ supervision duties during lunch or recess
- school staff can work together to prepare an after-class snack for teachers
- organize a social activity followed by a meal with the school staff
- organize a card and poster contest on the theme of Teacher Appreciation Week
- prepare a breakfast for teachers while parents supervise the classrooms
- have teachers take part in a draw for movie tickets
At the secondary level, in the youth and adult sectors
The students can:
- write a poem in honour of the teachers, read it over the intercom at the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week and publish it in the school newspaper
- put together a big bunch of balloons and write the name of each teacher on a balloon along with a characteristic that describes him or her
- write a message on a card for a teacher explaining what they appreciate most about him or her
- create an acrostic using a favourite teacher’s first name and mentioning his or her best qualities
- give teachers a certificate of appreciation underlining their best qualities
- delegate a student to thank a teacher on behalf of the whole class
- make a corsage containing a message for each teacher
- sing a theme song for Teacher Appreciation Week or have a clown deliver a special message
- submit special requests on behalf of teachers to the school radio during Teacher Appreciation Week
- offer a teacher coffee and a muffin during a break
The students, with the help of the school principal and other partners, can:
- decorate the teachers’ room
- create a celebrity wall with photos of teachers at work
- organize a humorous awards ceremony in which students pay tribute to teachers and vice versa
- organize a lunch for teachers and prepare a show for them
- organize an activity focusing on a teacher’s interests
- do a video or a photo shoot of the teachers, presenting them in a new light
- organize a student-teacher improvisation match
- organize a game of hockey, soccer, etc., in which students play against teachers
- organize challenges involving teams of teachers and students
- organize an activity featuring the teachers, along the lines of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Jeopardy, Don’t Forget the Lyrics, and so on
School principals, with the help of the school’s partners, can:
- organize a wine and cheese buffet or a reception for the teachers
- have teachers take part in a draw for movie tickets
- organize an outdoor activity during the week, involving teachers and students
- suggest that teachers switch classes for one period
In vocational training
Students in vocational training could make use of their field of study in their tribute. For example:
- Students in cooking programs could prepare a meal for their teachers.
- Students in floristry or ornamental horticulture programs could give each teacher a plant or flower with a note explaining why they associate him or her with this plant or flower.
- Students learning sheet metal work or glass cutting and processing could design an original work for their teachers
- Students in secretarial studies could prepare a scroll containing a message of appreciation for teachers.
Here are some more general suggestions:
- Prominently display the posters distributed by the Ministère and those made in the school to mark Teacher Appreciation Week.
- Place a class photo inside a card with a word of appreciation for the teacher.
- Decorate the training centre, especially the parts of it most frequented by teachers.
- Prepare skits for the teachers and perform them during a lunch hour.
- Organize a treasure hunt or another activity for teachers.
- Make a calendar with a class photo and give it to the teacher.
- Organize a buffet for teachers, and have each student bring a dish.
- Divide students into small groups and assign each group a teacher to spoil for a day.
